Smart fitness bands and smart watches - a reflection of smart living?

Abstract

This paper starts from the observation of how smart fitness bands and smart watches are symbols of and also reflect smart living, serving as objects that distinguish inhabitants of smart cities from those of traditional cities. Objectives include analyzing wearables as tools of digital health and as cultural symbols of smart life in smart cities, next to the associated risks, and the way in which the perception of their users influences their perception of technological safety. Prior research includes studies of digital transformation, digital literacy in healthcare, and digital inclusion in smart city life contexts. The approach combines political and cultural studies, examining how wearable technologies align with European Union health policies and democratic values such as well-being and citizen empowerment. Culturally, these devices reflect the priorities of individualist societies where personal health monitoring supports self-reliance and autonomy. Vulnerabilities of citizens in the digital medium will be explored, starting from data protection concerns, digital divide, as well as frauds. Case studies of frauds related to wearables will be examined, together with the issues they raise. Results show that wearables promote active health engagement, allowing users to independently monitor their well-being and consult medical professionals selectively. The implications are related to the growing presence of misleading AI-generated content, such as fake videos advertising nonexistent smartwatch features, such as sugar levels control, and the need for skepticism in the digital world. Users must learn to critically assess claims about technological progress. The value of this paper lies in its interdisciplinary analysis, revealing wearables not just as health tools, but as cultural artifacts reflecting autonomy, digital inclusion, and even community-building, as many apps allow for social connection among users with similar goals.
